About Dhiikala

Dhikala is one of the most popular and sought after tourist accommodation in the Corbett Tiger Reserve. Herds of elephants and deer roam the vast grounds of the famous Dhikala Chaur. This is probably the best place in the Tiger Reserve to see the very rare pine deer. A stay in Dhikala is an experience that every wildlife lover looks forward to. The Dhangari Gate is the entrance to the Dhikala area. Dhangari Gate has located 18 km from Ramnagar and Dhikala Tourist Complex is located 31 km inside Dhangari Gate. Canter Safari

Chaurs (Grass Lands)

Dhikala is famous for the vast grassland that is packed with Elephants, Spotted Deers, Wild pigs, Hog Deersetc. Often visitors can spot a wild Tiger crossing the grassland or chasing a deer.

Watch Tower

The observation tower located at Dhikala is in an excellent location and gives an excellent view of the wild animals that come to graze in the nearby chauras. It also gives you an excellent view of the entire Ramganga river bed as well as a large part of the chauras Dhikala. This observation tower is located a 10-minute walk from Dhikala Forest Park. About 50 meters south of the observation tower there is a man-made reservoir, which makes it an ideal place for watching deer, elephants, wild boars and sometimes tigers.

Crocodile Point at Gairal

Crocodile pool is located on the short cut from Gairal to the other rest houses west of it. It is also a balcony-like natural structure, which looks down upon a pool almost permanently inhabited by crocodiles.

Sambar Trail

This jungle trail stretches from the foot of the Dhikala Watch Tower to the Khinanauli Rest Station. This area probably sees the most tigers. This is due to its ideal location between the hills on one side and the river bed on the other. Most of the animals pass through this area as they move down for water. Elephants are also frequent visitors to this road and it is important to be able to reverse your vehicle as easily as you can forward if you plan to descend this road just before sunset during the summer months. A few eagle eels have also nested high in a tree next to this trail. If patience is one of your virtues, it is almost certain that this trail will not bring you back disappointed.

Flora & Fauna

Several species of deer can be seen in the area, including spotted deer and others such as para (Axis pornicus), sambar (Cervus unicolor), Kakar (Muntiacus muntjak), which is also called barking deer because of the hoarse sound it makes, resembling a dog’s bark. bark. It is one of the best places on earth to see tigers and wild elephants. This area is also a dream destination for bird watchers. The surrounding forests and large reservoirs support a wide variety of birds in the area. The probability of spotting a sloth bear is very high in this section of the forest. They are attracted to both termites and the sweet nectar of mahua flowers. Bears have been recorded in an intoxicated state as the mahua ferments in their digestive system.

Dhikala FRZ
Dhikala, known for its panoramic landscape, is situated on the edge of the Patli Dun Valley, along the Ramganga River, against the backdrop of the Kanda Range. The old FRZ building was built in 1890. Although it was one of the first accommodation units built in the park, until 1963 staff did not live here during the monsoons as it was heavily infected with malaria. The ground floor was used as the office of the Directorate of Forest Management, and the upper floor was used as accommodation for the forest officials. It has the unique distinction of being the starting point for Project Tiger. Subsequently, after 1975, Dhikala was officially opened and the number of accommodation increased due to the sudden growth of tourism. In addition to the old FRH building, several other types of accommodation have been added. The complex is a complete site in itself with restaurants, nature guides, jeep safaris, a well-stocked library, evening movie screenings and walking trails. A post office is also available to share your impressions of the park with letters. The observation towers located nearby provide an excellent view of the entire Ramganga riverbed and the majestic chauris.

 

Gairal FRH
The old Gairal forest compound was built in 1903. The new FRZ there has four rooms and an eight-bed dormitory, situated next to the Ramganga River where it enters the national park. FRH enjoys a peaceful environment of great beauty and is excellent for bird watching. The nearby crocodile pool offers the opportunity to see the reptiles in the water or basking on the adjacent rocks.

 

Sarpduli FRH
One of Corbett’s most beautiful forest retreats overlooking the Ramganga River is located at Sarpaduli, 30 km from Ramnagar. It was built in 1908. Elephant traffic is quite common in the area and visitors can even see otters in the nearby river. Goral can be seen on the slopes on the other side of the Ramganga river. Large pools of mahseer and piscivorous birds such as osprey, piscivorous eagle etc. can be seen in this area.

 

Sultan FRH
Sultan, the first FRZ on the Dhangari-Dikala road, has the advantage of seclusion and solitude. The adjacent sal forest is one of the densest in KTR and supports a large number of deer and birds. It was built in 1903 and is an ideal place for a small group of visitors.
